Essential: Restoring The Can-Do Attitude – UPDATED

In a recent Facebook post, Richard Fernandez [aka: Wretchard T. Cat] offered these thoughts [hint: he always expresses an initial thought in his post’s text, then follows it up with more detail in the Comments section]:

Remember how an eminent economist argued we could solve all our problems by pretending earth was under attack by space aliens? Today earth is under actual attack by viruses from inner space and no one expects an economic boom. Why?

Maybe because an actual alien attack from inner space requires the production of specific goods rather than generic holes in the ground that an exercise in fake demand generation would supply.

The virus is making an unexpected market demand, like a customer no one could anticipate walking in the door, least of all the State guided Chinese economy. The advantage may belong to economies that can set up quickest to service the market for rare events.

There used to be something called the “can do” attitude which described the ability to rapidly adapt to the unexpected. That’s been supplanted in some societies with the “can’t do” attitude which always finds some reason to explain why a given task is impossible.

The “can do” attitude thrived where initial failure was tolerated. During WW2 for example, the legendary weapons were often preceded by a string of dismal failures. But people were more accepting of risk in a real invasion. They had to be.

It was the Wide-Spread Belief in the Can-Do Attitude that made America the top nation in the World.  Down to the DIY actions that many Americans took, up to the Attitude’s power in propelling us to Victory in World War II, this Ingrained Mindset brought us Glory in every field of Endeavor.¹

It is an Iron Rule that Failures must be allowed to breed Successes or the Effort is Wasted.

Too many in America today seem to have Adopted a Can’t-Do Attitude and we are hurting as a result.

From my book, THE PRESENT CRISIS:

Leaving illegal aliens aside [and ‘in the shadows’] for the moment: too many people who reside within the borders of The United States are not Americans.

Sure: legally, they are ‘Americans’, but, in their Hearts and Minds — in their Souls — they possess none, or very little, of that unique Spirit that has animated this country since the 17th Century, that can-do, fearless attitude which took a wild and savage land and made it the center of Western Civilization, a sanctuary of Freedom and Ordered Liberty, and a refuge from Tyranny.

So many of our fellow countrymen are Moral Weaklings who place more trust in the government to meet their Physical and Spiritual Needs than they place trust in God and in themselves as Free Men and Women. They are poster children for the Retardation of the American Spirit. They are committing Moral Treason.  [Chapter 4: The Triumph Of Leftist Thinking]

The Left will always discourage American Innovation that proves the worth of The Free Market — the former Despises all the Victories achieved by the latter.  The Left are willing to let people Die to protect their Precious Ideology.  They seek nothing less than to Destroy our DIY Mindset in every possible way, eradicate it in every nook-and-cranny.

We must Resolve ourselves to Maintain and Strengthen our Can-Do Attitude; we must Restore it where it has been Defeated; we must get-a-hold of ourselves.

¹ It should also be noted that the companies labeled ‘Big Pharma’ have practiced the Can-Do Attitude since their creation.  The reason why their drugs are so expensive is because they have to re-coup the enormous costs of Research and Development, which involves a lot of Trial And Error, experiencing many Failures before they hit on the right mixture.

Sadly, in a few cases, this has lead to some company officials to hiding side-effect information and bad marketing decisions [Greed afflicts many — no one is Immune], but, let us not forget, an awful lot of the so-called ‘Victims!’ of these drugs brought their Health Issues and Miseries upon themselves by not following directions and by ‘abusing the privilege’, as it were [I’ve been having to take Vicodin everyday since 2007 to ease the pain of my Chronic Neuropathy and I have not Abused it].

Big Pharma is responsible for me being here this day.  It has provided the Chemo and Radiation and the other Drugs I need to keep on living a somewhat Normal Life…and I am grateful.  It has, and is, providing the Immunological Drugs I will need in the future.

UPDATE on 20 February 2020 at 1633:

In the Comments section of this post, Mike [aka: That Mr. G. Guy and a longtime Friend-In-The-Ether] offers this spot-on response:

Like you, I don’t have a problem with big pharma charging what the market will bear to recoup their investment in R&D. It probably saved my life with the treatment for my liver disease…or at least prolonged it.

But that being said, after a certain number of years, the price of some of these drugs has to reduce in cost.

It should if Market Forces, instead of Greed, are allowed to flourish.  Perhaps, also, Mike, we should examine the length of time allotted to those companies for Exclusive manufacturing rights?
